This book is about the relationship between domestic architecture, ethnicity, households, and economic complementarity. The setting is the south-central Andes, a region defined as stretching north-south from the Río Majes in southern Peru to Taltal in northern Chile and east-west from the Pacific coast to thevalluna, or selva, on the eastern flanks of the Andes in Bolivia (Aldenderfer 1989a; fig. ). More specifically, the papers in this volume focus on two areas: the western valleys of the Pacific watershed and the Titicaca basin.
