a couple of the Thacher Island guys took advantage of the flat water and headed over to check on the keeper’s house on Stratsmouth. Her grandparents, Harold and Sylvia Whitaker (my aunt and uncle) were caretakers there in the 80s, as was my great grandfather Albert Whitten.

Thacher Island is a small island off Cape Ann on the Massachusetts coast in the United States. It is a part of the Town of Rockport. It was a place where some naval confrontations, both minor and major, took place, which helped secure a victory for the colonists. The island, named after Anthony Thacher, is located in perilous waters, where there have been many shipwrecks.

This island has twin lighthouses due to the extreme fog and hidden reefs in the area. We had a very nice boat ride to thachers island, climbed both the north and south light houses, brought a lunch and had a pic-nic in Carrolls camp ground park. Many a schooner sunk off this coast of Cape Ann and one of the first decisions of President George Washington was the erection of these two lighthouses. The island it a bird sanctuary with many seagulls and other flying creatures there. Do be aware of the seagull excrement, so mind your step. a nice boat ride back and visited salvages island to see seals. Date of experience: July 2016.
