Heinl's book is one of the best histories of the Marine Corps up to 1962. It gives an in-depth analysis of how and why the Corps was formed, its battle history and what it has done to survive the constant sniping by many Army generals and politicians who did not see a use for another "army". He has concentrated on the leadership of this elite force, its traditions and battleground experiences.

This is a history of the Marines, by a Marine, for the Marines, --and for everyone else who gets a lift when the band pays that song beginning "From the halls of Montezuma..." This spirited account of the colorful fighting men who have helped make U.S. history, highlighted by deeds of bravery and devotion and accented with terse words on the mercuric behavior of American opinion and its effect on the Marine Corps. The marines have been fighting for 240 years; between battles they have fought for the right to exist. "In peace, th' stuff flies around and war looms ahead. In war, th' stuff flies around--and peace looms ahead." Colonel Heinl is a career officer. His material, much of it, is flavored with the pride of tradition and achievement so evident in the Marine Corps. The numerous illustrations vividly portray Marines from Colonial times to Korea. The maps comprise an atlas of battles around the world.
