The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. A classic for Halloween and campfires, the story has been adapted multiple times for stage and screen since its publication in 1820. Washington Irving’s short story of a New England schoolteacher and his chilling encounter with the Headless Horseman is one of the United States’ most celebrated literary works.

It's my great honor to welcome Dexter Filkins to the stage.

Irving Howe taught at the City University from 1963 to 1986, and left his indelible mark on this institution and on many individual students. He has said that his students likewise left a mark on him, and it's true that CUNY students have something unique and powerful to offer. One of our aims of this lecture series is to keep Irving Howe's legacy alive and relevant to new generations of public thinkers and actors forged here at CUNY. His book The Forever War won the 2008 National Books Critics Circle Award for non-fiction. It's my great honor to welcome Dexter Filkins to the stage. Thank you. (applause) - Hi.
