The author, Peter Earle, is described as a professor of Economic History, so expect dry. This book is also written with as much of a perspective on Naval efforts to exterminate the vermin of the sea as on the vile hoards themselves. The author does dig into Naval historical records to unearth what was going on to bring the marauders under control. The pirates are not treated as the sympathetic subjects one finds in another fine book of this subject, "Villains of All Nations" by Marcus Rediker. To that degree, this volume bring fine degree of balance to the subject.
