Hypertension is the most common chronic disease in the West Indies, and is a major health problem today being among the 10 most common causes of death in the English-speaking territories of the region. Most patients have essential hypertension. Renal failure, stroke, and cardiac failure are the most common complications, myocardial infarction being relatively uncommon in black patients.

WHAT IS CULTURE SHOCK As culture is the guidelines for our behaviors, we depend on our cultures. It gives us stability and security because we know how to understand and respond to what is happening. Culture shock caused by culture differences might arise in the process of intercultural communication. However, we can, with practice and efforts, develop the necessary skills to overcome these problems.
Acculturation and cultural identity . Acculturation happens when groups of individuals from different cultures come into continuous first hand contact with subsequent changes in the original cultural patterns of either or both groups. Acculturation is the term given to the changes in everyday practices, attitudes and beliefs that take place when two relatively isolated cultures come into contact. This is a complex process (Box . ).
