The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5-6, 1864. It was the beginning of the Overland Campaign, the bloodiest campaign in American history and the turning point in the war in the Eastern Theatre.

The Battle of the Wilderness was fought on May 5-6, 1864. The Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5–7, 1864, was the first battle of Lt. Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 Virginia Overland Campaign against Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The battle was tactically inconclusive, as Grant disengaged and continued his offensive.

  • This is a well written book, by one who is very knowledgeable about the Civil War. The book is very general and will be of value to anyone who is seeking a "passable knowledge" of this vast and important battle. While the Wilderness battle lasted only two days, the Confederate army lost a number of generals, in particular Gen. Leroy A. Stafford and Gen. John Jones in this battle. In addition, a number of creditable generals, Gen Benning in particular, were wounded and lost to this battle, to some degree. The length of the book prohibits much of this aspect of the battle. There are several good maps in the text, but the content writing is only ninety-one pages.
In fairness, I would recommend this book from a very profound scholar of the Civil War as a good beginning for the study of this important battle, followed by Edward Steere, The Wilderness Campaign as the leading source for the study of the battle of the Wilderness. I rate this book as a four star source, ONLY because of the brevity of the book.

  • This book is a wonderful look at the two icons of the Civil War in battle. Magnificent!
