Euell Theophilus Gibbons (September 14, 1911 - December 29, 1975) was an outdoorsman and proponent of natural diets during the 1960s. He was born in Clarksville. The writing is more concise, more to the point than Gibbons' normal work. Gibbons tended to meander a little, and he seemed more interested in teaching us about recipes and cooking requirements in his previous books. This book reads more like a dictionary of edible plants, but not with the boring brevity of an actual dictionary.

This is the last of Euell Gibbon's books and was finished by another author (Tucker) from Gibbon's notes. It is the most complete of all his books and covers just about every wild edible plant. It does not have photos, just some very excellent drawings. A field guide is necessary to go along with this book, as it is not meant to identify plants but rather to tell you the uses and how to prepare them for the table. It is humerous in many places and a good book to have in your edible plant library. 16 people found this helpful.

  • If you want a definitive handbook on edible wild plants, this is the book to go to. I suppose a lot of the credit for the superior writing in this book should go to Gordon Tucker. This book reads more like a dictionary of edible plants, but not with the boring brevity of an actual dictionary.

If you are looking for great color photographs that clearly show how to distinguish the plants mentioned in this book, don't bother to purchase the book. But you can find all the color photos you want on the internet--this book lets you know which ones are worth looking for.

Nobody beats Gibbons for actual knowledge of wild plants. So I am extremely pleased with the Gibbons/Tucker production of this book. It is too bad that Gibbons is gone. It would have been great to see more from this team.
