  • I say this cook book is fun because of the way my husband and I have been using it - which I think, is the intended use. The book is divided up into lessons, with a variety of entrees, sides and dessert recipes in each chapter, along with detailed explanations and illustrations to really teach you how to cook. There are notes on which utensils are required, what cooking techniques will be employed, how to arrange the various menus into balanced meals, and so on.

My husband and I have dedicated ourselves to trying each recipe, allowing ourselves an entire day per chapter, and carefully documenting our experience together with photographs and so on. We make sure that we both get plenty of time to practice washing greens, whipping cream, searing roasts and so on. It's been a blast, and best of all, everything has turned out deliciously. We've bottled the salad dressing and given it as hostess gifts, and we make the Vegetable Soup almost once a week.

There may be one or two we have to skip (Cold Brain Salad will be among those, sadly. The name, which is greatly disappetizing by itself, is followed by stomach-turning instructions to separate the lobes, remove the membrane and gently use one's fingers to massage out the blood stains between the folds. Thank goodness our markets no longer sell calf brains, lest our resolve to complete EVERY lesson would have been sorely tested.)

I've recommended the book to several other couples who enjoy cooking, because it requires very little prior experience in the kitchen. The lessons move from very simple (salads, soups, roasts) to more complex recipes (some kind of cream-puff-cake-thing that is unfortunately VERY far away on our current timetable). It's a great way to spend time together doing something productive and rewarding, and it's pretty inexpensive comparative to say, taking up golf or tennis together.

    Try it, it's fun!
