The bleak, volcanic island of Ascension, 800 miles from its nearest neighbour St Helena, was described by a Victorian naval officer as 'one of the strangest places on the face of the earth'. It is still exceedingly odd. Uninhabited when it was taken over by the British in 1815, it was an almost perfect natural vacuum - a triangular heap of lava and ash. When the Royal Marines brought in plants and animals, some flourished, others died.

  • Dad never spoke about his WWII experience. He spent two years on this little known island. Now I can appreciate the sacrifice he made. This book is a complete revelation.

  • Duff Hart- Davis did an outstanding job of research to write this excellent history of Ascension Island. I'm sure it took him a tremendous amount of research to accomplish the great job that he did. Having visited there marlin fishing for a week, I really appreciated the great job he did. It made everything really come to life....
