Dad and Mother satinside talking it over

Dan and Dave sat outside in the corner of the chimney, both scratchingthe ground with a chip and not saying anything. Dad and Mother satinside talking it over. Sometimes Dad would get up and walk round theroom shaking his head; then he would kick old Crib for lying under thetable. At last Mother struck something which brightened him u. p, and hecalled Dave. Catch Topsy and-" He paused because he remembered the old mare wasdead. Run over and ask Mister Dwyer to lend me three hoes. Dave went; Dwyer lent the hoes; and the problem was solved. That washow we started.

PLOUGHING and sowing all over. For more than a year Dave rushed off every night. Damme! look at that horse! Dad used to say, when he’d be at the yard. Then he’d think hard, and begin again when he met Mother. A hundred acres of the plain-land under wheat and light showers falling every week. Dad’s good luck was continuing. Yet we were sharing other misfortunes freely enough. This night-work’ll have t’ stop, or there won’t be a horse about the place fit t’ ride. What the devil the fellow wants chasing round the country for every night I don’t know, I’m sure. Dad knew well enough.

Steele Rudd (Arthur Hoey Davis) was born on 14 November 1868 to Mary and Tom Davis of Drayton. When Arthur was about four years old, the large family of fifteen moved to Emu Creek near Stanthorpe. Arthur left Emu Creek school at twelve and went on to work as a tarboy on Pilton Station. Arthur began to write the Selection stories to combat his homesickness for the farm and the bush. When the Bulletin received his first articles they declared that they would take all that he wrote. On our selection was published by locally born literary critic, . Stevens who was oblivious to Steele Rudd’s true identity until he published the second selection book.

On Our Selection is a 1932 comedy based on the Dad and Dave stories by Steele Rudd. These had been turned into a popular play by Bert Bailey and Edmund Duggan in 1912, which formed the basis for the screenplay. Bailey repeats his stage role as Dad Rudd. He also wrote the script with director Ken G. Hall
