  • great

  • This book is a well-crafted masterpiece. The authors wrote some fascinating and informative anecdotes about life along Cape Cod, in the near and distant past. The book is arranged topically. There are stories about shipwrecks, pirates, explorers, fishermen, and statesmen.

The authors tell stories about religious, cultural, political, vocational, and architectural subjects. There is a rich tapestry of variety in the book and the authors move from topic to topic with ease. There is a section on famous visitors to the Cape. President Grover Cleveland lived in Gray Gables estate in Bourne. I visited his former railway depot at the Aptuxcet Trading Post just over the Sagamore Bridge. The authors tell some interesting tales about how Cleveland was operated on to remove cancer secretly on a boat during his presidency.

Coogan and Sheedy described some of the business ventures along the Cape. People made a living chopping ice out of waterways. There were also people who got involved in unique ventures getting skunk pelts and by collecting ambergris, a by product produced by whales. Cape Cod residents were known for their ingenuity.

My mother was a resident of the Upper Cape through her childhood. She went to the Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Buzzard's Bay as a child. The authors told about how the church was transported from Hull to Buzzard's Bay via the Cape Cod Canal. This story was a nice personal record for me because my parents were married in that particular church.

This is a delightful book that is fascinating throughout. The book covers events from all over the Cape from Bourne to Provincetown. Every major town is represented. The book is full of tales of the famous Otis family of Revolutionary War days to the life and service of the Civil War General Joseph Eldridge Hamblin. The book covers people of modest achievements as well. The diversity and variety of the tales is quite impressive. This is an enchanting and whimsical book that is a must-read for anyone interested in learning about the history of Cape Cod.
