Harriet Turner knows all about journeys  . Never having read any of Monica McInerney's books before, I didn't know what to expect with Family Baggage. I have to say, the first chapter kept me only mildly interested. However, the further I read, the more I enjoyed the story. For anyone interested in the dynamics of a large extended family, this book will provide a fun, interesting read. The characters really grew on me - none were stereotypes and I particularly enjoyed the Patrick Shawcross character.

  • This is the 2nd of Monica McInerney's book I have read. I do like her 'Maeve Binchy' like style of writing about families and every day sort of life. I thought the main characters were a bit annoying but loved the one on the tour - especially Mr Douglas getting his words mixed up (we have a friend that is the same so I could relate to him) and also Miss Talbot and her choose .
Also the "surprise" near the end was a shallow for the reaction that it had on everyone.
Never the less a good read and I am finding that I want to read more of her books, especailly the earlier ones which appear to be better than her later ones. If you haven't read her before is not a bad one to start with. I wish there were half marks as I am torn between a 3 star and 4 star review on this. Will make it 4 purely becaue of the tour stories.

  • This is a complicated family with a deep secret only two people know, and one of them has died. The entire family is affected by the secret and the circumstances surrounding it.
The story successfully shows the push and pull of family dynamics and personalities.
This book is well written and engaging with interesting characters.

  • Interesting story line, shows the consequences of the decisions we make when we think we are doing the best thing in a situation. Sometimes there is no right decision. This family weathered through it and came out stronger.

  • A bit too much of too many stories. At first I thought I was reading about one person then more but I felt something missing some connection that would tie it all in. One family's extra baggage? ?

  • The characters were well developed and the story flowed smoothly from the past life experiences to the present.
    It has intrigue and romance.

  • I loved the story. It was heartfelt and a wonderful family saga. It made me smile at times and brought tears too. Lovely.

  • This is a very easy read... Thoroughly
    Enjoyable...

  • great book !!!
