Kin Platt pulls a switch on this formula in Flames Going Out. Tammy has only a tentative hold on reality and must reassure herself of her continued existence by secretly lighting matches to see the flames that have come to symbolize life to her. When she falls in love with Jonathan, the emotion is he. . When she falls in love with Jonathan, the emotion is her lifeline back to sanity. Even though he is even more disturbed than she and eventually succeeds in destroying himself, his death is the event that shocks her into taking charge of her life.

Kin Platt (1911–2003) was an American writer-artist, painter, sculptor, caricaturist and comics artist, best known for penning radio comedy and animated TV series, as well as children's mystery novels, for one of which he received the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award. This book is the 4th in the Going Down in Flames series and keeps the story line going. This book was good, but the saddest of the series by far. The book ends in heartbreak with the reader hoping the next book has an HEA for Bryn.
