Today, stories of violence against African Americans come not just from the inner city, but the suburbs. In the hundred largest metropolitan areas in the United States, half of African Americans live in the suburbs, not the cities. Suburbs were never as lily-white as their reputation, but today they’re even more diverse. But some police and white residents haven’t.

Cole was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the middle of three sisters. Her parents are Doris Freeland Cole, a retired kindergarten teacher who has devoted her life to her children, and the Honorable Harry A. Cole, the first black judge on the Maryland Court of Appeals
